Children’s Home, Holy Word Foundation
The project is located in Xinyi district, Keelung city, 7-minute walk from Shenmei elementary school and a 5-minute ride from downtown and the hospital. The site is only 861 m² and extremely narrow and irregularly-shaped. In addition, it is on a slope with a 7-meter height difference. The design aims to maximize the land usage and to fulfill the diverse spatial needs of this children’s home.
The site is adjacent to the entrance of the surrounding community. The elements of the elevation echo upon the color of the existing surrounding buildings to keep the harmony. A high cross on the façade is used to emphasize the religious image and imply that God’s love shines on the helpless. The children’s home is on the first through the fourth floor. Upon entrance into the lobby, a stairway with sunlight shown through colorful mosaic pieces are seen and become a focus of the space that connects the floors. Other major spaces are the administrative offices, a library, and an outdoor garden. When the weather is pleasant, the occupants of this home are able to read under the trees or host activities. The second floor is the cafeteria, also a multifunctional floor: kitchen and offices. On the third and fourth floors, the children’s dormitories are located, divided by gender and age, with bathrooms and teacher dormitories. The fifth floor is a dormitory for faculty & guests. Each dormitory uses traditional residential layout and forms a home-like atmosphere and counseling offices.
The children’s home expects to absorb in the local community to create a nice, friendly interaction platform and become a supportive power of homeland. After completion, Holy Word Foundation intends to play a role that not only helps the kids and juveniles, but provides a home with heart, receiving education, and growth.
