National Convention and Exhibition Center Nangang Exhibition Hall Expansion
The exhibition center in Taipei (Taiwan) is busy and will be expanded on a neighboring property. For the new exhibition hall, a competition was conducted. The J.J.Pan & Partners in collaboration with Gerkan, Marg and Partners were selected winner among four prequalified contenders.
The exhibition hall will fit through its clear rectangular body into the urban context of the environment. The building is topped with a simple expressive folded roof, which is to make the building appear lower. It is enclosed in the north and south by a translucent, greenish glazed wall. The façade articulated by horizontal slats shimmering glass facade profile is to induce associations with jade.
The eastern elevation is fully glazed with main entrance and foyer behind. The double height opening will be particularly prominent at night, whereas the west facade remains closed as a contrast.
The water imagery of this project echoes the symbol of the sail of the existing exhibition hall, interpreting the vision of keeping pace with world trade. Through the integration of the team’s design experiences domestically and internationally, the local culture and green building concepts are realized, materializing into a modern exhibition center that vividly presents technological artistry.
