NTUST Dormitory Reconstruction Design Competition

[INTER] is employed as a design operational formula. [INTER] is a prefix which means “between,” “among”; and can be attached to our design objectives by interpreting its meaning in three parts:

INTER+ CAMPUS= [INTER]LACE
INTER+ STUDENTS = [INTER]RELATIONSHIP
INTER+ENVIRONMENT= [INTER]ACTION

Part One: INTER+ CAMPUS= [INTER]LACE
A two story mixed-use public podium is carefully arranged to create natural passages in-between curved interlaced loops, in turn attached to an open woven landscaped public platform that connects with the existing campus amenities. The result is a lively mix of life and energy that revitalizes the surrounding area.

Part Two: INTER+STUDENTS = [INTER]RELATIONSHIP
NTUST is an inviting environment for international students and this project is its manifestation. The design represents the mixture of cultures by using two independent [inter]locking L-shape volumes, linked by sky bridges that create canyon-like voids spatially, and serves as outdoor platforms functionally. These voids are transformed into open spaces, expressed with bright yellow on the façade and filled with tropical green. This strategy turns the common tower form in a dense urban environment into a rich vertical student community.

Part Three: INTER+ENVIRONMENT= [INTER]ACTION
The proposal introduces nature within the building by incorporating features such as extensive roof gardens, landscaped sky terraces and balconies. Furthermore, the voids within the massing act as enormous ventilation tunnels that facilitate summer fresh air flow towards the common spaces located on the podium.
