Penghu Aquarium

Built for Taiwan Fisheries Research Institute, this project includes an aquarium building plus staff living quarters and a parking garage. The total floor area is 4,690sq.m., and the construction cost was NT$498,000,000.
Carried out as a joint venture between KCM of the United States and our office, design work took more than two years before the project was given out to bid in November, 1992. The aquarium uses sea-water circulation loop as a principal design theme and in appearance stresses natural plicity, while other related structures also adopt a low profile to blend in with the surrounding seascape.

The aquarium building is two stories high, with ground floor exhibit spaces divided into three zones devoted to shore-side, coral reef and deep-sea fishes and aquatic creatures, the most spectacular being a 14-meter-long observation tunnel through the deep-sea zone.
On the second floor are research laboratories, lecture rooms, offices and a temporary exhibition area, as well as a multi-media projection room for education. Staff housing includes a three-story dormitory with 18 single rooms and a two-story apartment building for six married staff with families.

The project was completed in 1996.
