South Service Centre, Mennonite Social Welfare Foundation

Mennonite Foundation has been contributed to the elderly services around Hualien area for decades. In order to take care of the seniors in southern Hualien, the project is launched to extend services from the North to the South.

The site is located in Yuli Township, Hualien County. The site area is 5,970 m² and will be divided into two phases for construction. This new South Service Centre is phase I and occupies 695 m² and phase II will be a long-term care facility after the zoning is altered by the government.

Situated in the coastal range, this project is surrounded by rich nature. On the east side of the site flanks railroads, as well as the main entrance and elevators, and a 12-meter wide road is found on the south side. Uniquely, a vertical stairs core forms a visual focus. A sculpture-like cross on the façade stands as a metaphor for Mennonite Foundation’s mission and reduces railroad noises via its building configuration. The building envelope uses tiles and close-lightly pebbles to reflect the spirits of simplicity. The staggered façade gives the façade a richer expression. The building consists of one below and four above grade levels, providing family and social services. On the first floor, professional care is provided in the daytime. The offices and meeting spaces are located on the 2nd and 3rd floors, and the dormitories are on the 4th.

Mennonite Foundation is fully aware that local teams are very important for the elderly to “age in place.” For a long time, the resources are allocated in the North. In future goals, a long-term care facility is expected to be set up here. This project is the first step of Yuli social welfare care campus, and yet, an important base for Mennonite Foundation in the south of Hualien.
