Student Dormitory, Nan Kai College
The building is situated in the north-western part of the campus, next to tennis and basketball courts and near the library. An L-shaped structure with a common lobby provides access to separate men and women students’ living quarters, while forming an entry plaza where large outdoor events may take place.
Formal language and coloration of exterior design follows that of previous re-construction work (Education, Engineering and Administration Buildings which were completed in 2001) with emphasis on simple and clean massing, while care was taken to shield outdoor air condition units from view. Thus the campus with buildings from different periods gradually acquires a harmonious, unified character.
The basement contains a dining hall, snack shops, recreation room, barber shop and beauty parlor. The ground floor lobby leads to a bookstore and reading room, men and women students’ entry halls, and living quarters for the dormitory supervisors. Dormitory rooms are arranged on the 2nd – 8th floors, with separate vertical cores for men and women via electronic controlled entrances. There are 16 rooms per floor for both men and women, as well as a lounge, kitchenette and laundry facilities. A total of 882 dwelling units are provided, with 4 students to a room for the most part and a few 3-student rooms for the handicapped. State-of-the-art internet access are provided for each desk in all rooms.
